Stubičke Toplice are popularly known as Stubaki. This is the municipality which is made up of Stubičke Toplice, Gornja and Donja Stubica.
Below the place Stubičke Toplice there are large springs of thermal water where the place has its name. There are even two of them – Matija Gubec and Terme Jezerčica … Also, Rehabilitation Spas are in them, and there is a beautiful green park surrounding them.
Donja Stubica is located in the northern slopes of Medvednica mountain, in the center of the Stubica valley. Its southern part covers the lush forests of the Medvednica Nature Park. Rich cultural and historical-monumental heritage make Donji Stubica a city with a recognizable identity and together with the mild climate and beautiful landscapes, make it an overwhelming place to rest and an alluring place for a peaceful family life. In Stubica area you can find several 16th to 19th century noble courts and curiosities that have flourished in the Baroque era.
The most famous is Stubički Golubovec Castle, and the parish church of the Holy Trinity is among the most prestigious Gothic sacral monuments of Croatian Zagorje culture. In 1899 one of the most successful pharmacists of that time – Eugen Viktor Feller, came to Donja Stubica. In 1901 he built a new neobaroken building near the church. There was a factory at the ground floor of the building where Feller’s world-famous Elsa-fluid product was manufactured. Elsa-Fluid was a cure for all diseases. It was exported to almost all European countries, as well as Egypt, Japan and China, while it especially won America at the time of prohibition. Although in its content it had a high percentage of alcohol, the medicine brought significant income, both to the Feller family, and to Donja Stubica itself.
Due to the large export of medicine,the Stubica’s post office had a great income and it was the first post office in Croatian Zagorje that participated in international postal traffic. E.V. Feller has been proud of his charities, helping students and the various societies. In 1918, he opened a foundation for helping mothers of soldiers killed in the war.
Nowadays, Donja Stubica is full of great offers from Family farms, which reminisence us with their domestic products at some other, simpler times. Also, the witness of these times is a large number of chapels placed on every hill surrounding the Stubaki area. The Peasant Revolt museum is the most famous cultural heritage of Stubaki and is housed in the baroque mansion of the Oršić family from the 18th century. Also, for a cultural offer there is a splendid Irish Pub that, apart from Pub is a restaurant with Zagorje’s food specialties. Nearby is Maximilian pastry shop under whose terrace river passes ; which is a special atmosphere for drinking coffee or trying out some of the traditional homemade desserts they offer.
Gornja Stubica
The first written document about the parish of Sv. Jurja Gornja Stubica originates in 1209, and in 1993 was founded the municipality of Gornja Stubca which now has about 6000 inhabitants. In the place there is 400 years old Gubec’s linden (protected nature object) with its legends about Gubeca and jacquerie he organised in 1573. There si originally decorated pub from that time in the nearby. In the center there is the Memorial Park Rudolf Perešin. Rudi was a pilot of a JNA military aircraft during 1991 aggression on Croatia . Rudi flew to Austria at the time and entered the legend for his act. Near the surrounding hills and valleys there are about twenty small and bigger settlements, and some people still live in old wooden houses.
